INCINTA
Enceinte.
I was listening to Jeremy Dutcher (if you haven't listened to him you MUST) and looking through some old doodles and this French
word came into my brain.
Enceinte. It means
Pregnant.
What? Why would this word pop into my mind? I am pregnant with ideas? Certainly not with child!!
Perhaps it
was this doodle.
Looks kind of like a pregnant profile. Non?
So I looked
up the word. It turns out it is also an
Achaic noun that means: an enclosure or
the enclosing wall of a
fortified place. As an adjective it means pregnant. It comes from the latin INCINTA which means to “gird
in”.
Makes sense
that it would describe a condition of being with child. We bearers of children gird them within
our fortified belly for nearly 10 months. And then they demand freedom.
What other
fortifications do we have around ourselves?
We all have them
I am sure. I have lovely walls to keep
people (and therefore Drama) at bay. As I get older I seem to be able to leave
my drawbridge down more often but when old fears reappear it slams shut.
I just got
back from Europe (which I promise I will tell you about next time) and due to
the jet lag and the stress of being open to new experiences for 2 weeks I have
a raised drawbridge. I am cranking it
open but it is a process. It is important to stay open to allow creative flow.
It may seem
that I am my normal self to everyone else but I have gone inside. Often this state is followed by a flurry of
creativity. I am pretty sure this time
is leading there too.
What fortifications are you using to protect yourself? How to you break through them?
I have attended
the Northumberland Rug Hooking guild’s hook in and taken a class on Tangle
art. I was a bit cranky and tired so I
didn’t get as much as I should have out of it but I did produce this interesting
tree.
Not the chair just the tree. Which looks better from afar.
Now I am
prepping to hook a rug of one of my pictures from Scotland as well as getting
stuff together for a course from Alice Vander Vennan in November.
I’ll be back
on October 16th to tell you about my 16 days in Europe!
